Planet On Fire: A Manifesto For the Age Of Environmental Breakdown by Matthew Lawrence and Laurie Laybourn-Langton–Book Review Part 2

I said I would do a part 2 on this book, but I still did not finish it. I thought about it a lot though.

They talk about socialization of certain industries as a way to stop global warming. And this is just not something I can get onboard with. I don’t believe in socialism. I believe in capitalism. Because until capitalism there was only the lower class and the upper class. Capitalism created the middle class. Until then most people never got to have much of an intellectual life or hobbies. Until capitalism it was basically a caste system.

Also, I do not trust any one group of people. I believe in checks and balances. And I also believe that money is a great check and balance. When people are doing something for money it keeps them good in some ways. It keeps them more honest than if they were doing it for other reasons, especially heartfelt reasons. Self-interest is what Darwinism is based on. People will almost always do what is in their best interest, when given the chance, and the education to understand what is in their best interest.

Look at the people who do my family’s bidding. They are not doing it because it is the right thing to do. They are doing it because they believe it is in their best self-interest. They don’t understand the situation globally or on a gene and cellular level or anywhere in between. Do you think they would fight to make themselves into a subhuman slave race on a gene and cellular level? Probably not. And what would stop the people who control certain industries that are socialized for the good of humans from being sheltered so they do not know what is in their best interest? These Mixed Polish NE/NE people have been sheltered for generations. Do you think they understand what all has been happening for generations? Don’t you think these are the people my family would put in places of power in socialized industries?

The people who work at the water and utility companies now add poison into the water. What do you think they would do if they did not have to worry about loosing their jobs for doing these things? What if their survival was not intertwined with their job and their actions on the job? Do you think that would make them put more or less poison in the water? I bet if there was no fear about being caught, they would add significantly more poison to the water.

Money and capitalism creates a little accountability. Yes, we need to change everything so we don’t ruin the Earth forever. But we need capitalism because it is the only accountability in some people’s lives. It is the only things keeping them as honest as they are. And we all know they are not honest.

Socializing certain industries like land, water, and/or oil is not the answer. It will just create more problems that we will not have time to fix. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Capitalism keeps people honest. Imagine how bad it would be without it! It would be worse. Without capitalism the middle class will disappear more than it already has. I don’t know about you all, but I do not want to live in a caste system any more than it already is!

Capitalism is the answer, if we want to retain the freedoms that everyone tries to take away from us. People have died for us to have the freedoms that we have today. We need to respect those people’s lives. We need to realize how much others have sacrificed for us to live the way we do. And we need to adjust the way we live so we don’t ruin the Earth and so the generations to come have the freedoms we have today. Like going outside and breathing air, forests, water, and food. There are so many things we take for granted everyday that we are jeopardizing for the following generations.
