Some Girls, Some Hats and Hitler by Trudi Kanter —Book Review

I do not search out World War II books, but I sure do seem to find more than my fair share going through the biography, autobiography, and memoir section, my favorite section. Some Girls, Some Hats and Hitler is a superb read. Trudi Kanter explains what it was like when the Nazis came to Austria and what it was like living in England during the war as a refugee. She is quite the witty lady!

“Not that the Vaterlandische Front was on our side, exactly. But my enemy’s enemy … “

Within the first few pages, Trudi eludes to the book The Art of War and I fell in love with her at this point. She was talking about the Austrian political party and how they were not exactly on the side of Jewish people, but they were an ally against the Nazis.

“It was 1935. The poor were getting poorer; the rich, richer.”

Seems this trend has been happening all over the world for who knows how long. Trudi was a hat designer and manufacturer. Being apart of the upper classes made her experience of WWII different than most the other experiences I have read. She did not have children. And only her Father was Jewish. Her Mother was not Jewish. However, both Trudi and her Mother were endangered by this fact.

“They don’t hide their swastika pins anymore–they wear them openly. Proudly.”

I read these books about people who lived through WWII and the Holocaust because these are the only people I have ever been able to relate to. My whole life my family has gotten the world to sign up to hunt me. Well, my Mother and Father. Hitler actually never did anything bad to me. He was quite pleasant. So was Mrs. Hitler. You all are so proud when you are chosen to destroy others. I don’t think you can even begin to understand how dysfunctional it is and ridiculous it looks from the outside. If you knew or understood, you wouldn’t do it.

The Austrians were not the original Nazis. I am pretty sure the originals were Mixed Polish just like both sides of my family. However, Hitler was Austrian. He aimed to make Austria apart of the German Federation.

“The bitter, envious, the unemployed. Worked up, ordered by their leaders to commit terrible crimes, they did as they were told. It took nerve to stand up to the Nazis.”

Have you seen when my family sends people to drive around town and light the town up with poisons? It is comical almost because you should see how riled up they get these people. They get them to poison themselves and get out of their minds, literally and figuratively. Did you know Hitler was a big Meth user? My family just gets you all riled up on poisons that are like meth when they want you to get out of your minds and commit crimes against humanity. When your logical brain is not assessable you will make emotional decisions. And if you are high on conscious altering substances, aka drugs, those emotional decisions will probably be very different than the decisions you would normally make. Those poisons you all use on yourselves are drugs and they cloud your judgement because they are conscious altering. Would you like them if they were not conscious altering? Would you get addicted to them if they were not conscious altering? No you would not.

Trudi escaped you people. She escaped the Nazis. I have not been that lucky. But maybe one day I will be. I read books like this because they give me hope that one day I will be free. I suggest you read some memoirs written by Jewish people during WWII, so you understand the consequences of your actions. It has been 100 years since the Nazi political party came to power in Germany. But it does not seem like you all learned much from WWII and the Holocaust. My family created WWII in both Western and Eastern Europe and I remember the cost it came at. Because I live this terror everyday. If I do not escape, you will never. It will be a perpetual World War and Holocaust until the end of time. And it will not be covert in your lives for much longer. Just as it is not in mine.

Some Girls, Some Hats and Hitler may be more your future than you ever expected.
